Accessible Cinema Screenings

Two of Pembrokeshire’s cinemas the Torch Theatre in Milford Haven and Theatr Gwaun in Fishguard shows different special screenings of films for people with disabilities, learning difficulties and/or autism.

The cinema screenings shows relaxed screenings for young people and children with disabilities, learning difficulties and/or autism, subtitled screenings for the deaf and hard-of-hearing and dementia-friendly screenings of classic movies for the elderly people.

The Torch Theatre does relaxed screenings for children and young adults with autism and sensory difficulties.

The Torch Theatre and Theatr Gwaun also does subtitled screenings for the deaf and hard-of-hearing cinemagoers.

The Torch also does dementia-friendly screenings called Movies & Memories showing classic movies for elderly people living with dementia and memory loss.

Relaxed Cinema Screenings

The Torch Theatre and Theatr Gwaun are showing relaxed screenings are open to anyone who would benefit from a relaxed, non-judgemental atmosphere including (but not limited to) people with an Autism Spectrum Condition; people with learning difficulties; people with sensory or communication difficulties; parents with young babies; and anyone who feels they would benefit from a more supportive and inclusive experience.

This experience is different to a normal trip to the cinema

  • Lights go low 
  • Volume turned down
  • No trailers and adverts
  • Unallocated seating for free movement
  • Bring your own food and drink

Theatr Gwuan in Fishguard is showing a dementia friendly screenings designed for people living with dementia.

This is a subtly-adapted, relaxed screenings designed for people with a range of conditions such as dementia, autism, learning disabilities/disabilities etc, their friends, family and carers.

This shows differences compared to a cinema trip: 

  • Theatre lighting will be left on low
  • Lower film volume
  • Hearing Loop and headphones are available
  • There will be a comfort break interval during the screening
  • Free Tea/Coffee and a slice of cake or biscuits
  • No trailers, no adverts
  • The audience are free to move about during the screening
  • Patrons can sing along to songs in musical numbers

Movies & Memories

The Torch Theatre are showing the Movies & Memories screenings on Tuesdays and Thursdays afternoons. The matinee screenings are designed to suit the needs for elderly people living with dementia and memory loss with their family, friends and carers.

The screenings will be set in a relaxed environment with lights stayed on and the sound is turned down with a special offer of tea, coffee, biscuits and cakes. Patrons can sing along to songs in musical numbers. There are no trailers and adverts. Patrons are free to move about during the screenings and there is a short interval during the screening with ice cream available to buy. The trained staff at The Torch will also be on hand to give the elderly people a very warm welcome.
